In most African countries, leadership is associated with education. For one to be recognized as a great leader he/she must demonstrate strong education background. As a matter of fact some countries, like Kenya, have enacted laws that would limit one from vying for political positions based on academic degree qualification.

However, most successful people in Africa never attained the degrees because of factors beyond them. It is not uncommon to lack school fees in Africa and being bereaved or being sick some months before examinations, just to mention a few, can really limit your performance. However, innate talent never dies and the same people, who may finally drop out or achieve very low grades, usually pick up the pieces and begin small businesses that they grow to become large enterprises.

It is the companies of these “non graduates” which finally employ the “so-called graduates”. More importantly, it is the owner of the company (The VIPs, CEO, MD, etc.), and who has no degree, that has to sign the internship certificate for the students, recommended by the university to his company, and due to graduate.

But when the same CEOs, VIPs, wish to join the same universities, and knowing that they are the ones who sign that the graduands are competent, they are rudely reminded that they do not meet the admission requirements. Education quickly fails to make sense then.

The same applies to great village or regional mobilizers who may not have academic prowess but are the most popular to become Members of Parliament or governors because of their natural leadership talent which connects greatly with their constituents.

However, laws have been set up to limit them ; they must have degrees. The degrees can only be obtained if they went to class with juniors in their offices or children the age of their own.
